What does it take to be an immigration support letter sponsor?
A letter of support is a document that serves to demonstrate that the petitioner has sufficient economic resources to financially support the person who is applying before immigration.
In addition to that, all immigration support letter sponsors must:
- Be United States citizens or permanent residents of the United States,
- Be at least 18 years old,
- Live in the United States (including United States territories and territorial possessions)
Before being able to submit the affidavit of financial support, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) indicates that the sponsor can only do so if their income exceeds 125% of the limit based on the HHS Poverty Guidelines in the United States. Finding a Co-Sponsor: An Alternative for Insufficient Income Proof
If the petitioner has no way to prove that their sponsor has sufficient income to be a sponsor, then they can get a co-sponsor as long as they meet all the requirements listed above.
