What is required to sponsor an affidavit of support for immigration? U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has established requirements to determine… who is eligible to be an immigrant sponsor, including the submission of an ‘affidavit of support’ demonstrating the sponsor’s financial capacity to support the immigrant. In this guide, you will learn what the requirements are to be an immigration affidavit of support sponsor.
What is required to sponsor an affidavit of support for immigration?
An affidavit of support is a document that serves to demonstrate that the petitioner has sufficient financial resources to financially support the person they are petitioning for immigration.
In addition, all sponsors must:
- Be U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents of the United States,
- Be at least 18 years old,
- Live in the United States (including U.S. territories and possessions)
Before you can submit the affidavit of financial sponsorship, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) states that the sponsor can only do so if their income exceeds 125% of the limit based on the HHS Poverty Guidelines in the United States, depending on the number of family members.

Requirements to be a Sponsor and Alternatives for an Affidavit of Support
If the petitioner cannot prove that their sponsor has sufficient income to qualify, they can find a co-sponsor, provided the co-sponsor meets all the previously listed requirements, including submitting an affidavit of support.
Being a sponsor is a big responsibility, and not everyone meets all the requirements to be one. We recommend you consult with an experienced immigration lawyer to determine if the person meets the requirements to sponsor the beneficiary.
